Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Drug abuse remains a pressing social issue globally, with youth being particularly vulnerable. Films have emerged as powerful tools for raising awareness, offering both cautionary tales and educational content about the dangers of substance abuse. In Nigeria, Nollywood and other local film industries have addressed this topic through engaging storytelling and relatable characters (Adamu & Ibrahim, 2023). In Bali Local Government Area, Taraba State, where youth drug abuse is a growing concern, the strategic use of films could significantly contribute to prevention efforts and public education (Garba, 2024).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite ongoing efforts to combat drug abuse in Bali, many youths remain uninformed about the long-term consequences of substance use. Films, with their ability to combine education and entertainment, present an underutilized medium for addressing this issue. However, the effectiveness of films in raising awareness about drug abuse in Bali has not been adequately explored, leaving a gap in strategies to combat this societal challenge (Yusuf, 2023).

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the portrayal of drug abuse in films watched in Bali.
  2. To assess the impact of these films on youth awareness and attitudes toward drug abuse.
  3. To identify challenges in using films as a medium for drug abuse education.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How is drug abuse portrayed in films viewed in Bali?
  2. What impact do these portrayals have on youth awareness and attitudes?
  3. What are the challenges of using films for drug abuse education in Bali?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Films effectively raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse among youth in Bali.
  2. Positive portrayals of drug abuse prevention influence attitudes and behaviors.
  3. Access to relevant films is limited by infrastructural and economic challenges.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study highlights the potential of films to contribute to drug abuse prevention strategies, offering insights for stakeholders to design impactful media campaigns.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the role of films in raising drug abuse awareness in Bali Local Government Area, Taraba State.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Drug Abuse: The excessive or inappropriate use of substances harmful to health.
  • Films: Cinematic productions used to convey messages and educate audiences.
  • Bali: A local government area in Taraba State, Nigeria.
